Sea Ice and Climate Change

Sea Ice and Climate Change

About This Event

Kick off PNW Climate Week 2026 with groundbreaking climate science! Join UW College of the Environment for a high‑energy, fully virtual talk and Q&A with Professor Cecilia Bitz , the Jerome M. Paros Endowed Chair in Atmospheric and Climate Hazard Research. Sea ice, a bedrock of Arctic communities and the bellwether of climate change, is under threat — but new research is providing a way forward. Professor Bitz is one of the world’s go‑to experts on Arctic climate change. She digs deep into how melting sea ice reshapes global systems, and builds the models that help us predict what’s coming next. As an NSF and NOAA‑funded researcher, she’s pushing the science that policymakers rely on, including briefing the U.S. Senate on Arctic risks. Her work sits at the front line of climate action. The talk will be livestreamed on UW Environment's social media channels. More info to come.
