Last month, Pope Leo XIV published his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”) on safeguarding the human person in the age of AI. It argues that technologists face a pivotal choice: to build technologies that exploit the vulnerable, concentrate power, and flatten our humanity; or to serve individual dignity and the common good. What happens when a powerful religious institution speaks on one of the most consequential technologies in history? What does it see that Silicon Valley overlooks?
